🚫 What Does This Error Mean

This error occurs when Google’s bandwidth limits for email accounts have been exceeded. In other words, your Google account has reached the maximum number of allowed connections or data usage for a certain period of time.

When this happens:

  • Your login details are still correct.

  • Mailbird Next can successfully authenticate your account.

  • But Google temporarily restricts access to your mailbox data, preventing Mailbird from syncing emails.

This is a limitation enforced by Google and can affect all third-party email clients, not just Mailbird Next. We have no control over this unfortunately.

⚠️ Note: Google applies bandwidth and connection limits to protect its servers from excessive usage. This situation commonly occurs if you:

  • Access the Google email account on multiple devices.

  • Have several email clients accessing the same inbox.

  • Keep background sync enabled on many apps.

  • Recently added a new device or client (such as Mailbird Next)

When these limits are reached, Google may temporarily throttle your account, blocking new or additional connections.

🔧 How to Fix the Issue in Mailbird Next

To reduce the load on Google’s servers and restore access, you should lower the number of connections used by Mailbird Next. Here's how you can reduce them in just a few clicks:

  1. Go to the Settings menu (i.e. the gear icon down the lefthand side)

  2. Click on the Accounts tab

  3. Select the Google account which has been affected by clicking on it.

  4. Click on the Settings tag at the top of the menu

  5. Set Maximum connections to: 2

  6. Click Save

📱 Reduce Connections in Other Email Clients

If you use the same Google account in other apps or devices (such as Apple Mail, Outlook, mobile apps, or another desktop client), you should also reduce the number of connections there as well (where possible).

Lowering connections across all email clients being used significantly improves the chances of Google lifting the restriction.

⏳ Allow Time for the Cool-Down Period

Changes do not take effect instantly, so if your account is already throttled by Google:

  • It may take several hours for access to be restored.

  • There is usually a short cool-down period before improvements are visible.

After adjusting the settings, wait a few hours before retrying.
